For partygoers a holiday home on Mykonos is ideal
This cosmopolitan island in the Cyclades comes to life during the legendary summers when celebrities, students and families descend in their droves. Mykonos also happens to be one of the leading gay-friendly destinations in Greece. The island's landscape and architecture is characterised by whitewashed residences, colourful window frames, bougainvillea plants and ancient churches and its holiday apartments, holiday rentals, holiday houses and holiday homes have a distinct Greek charm.
History of Mykanos
Although archaeological findings date back to 3000 BC in the Neolithic Age in, the Ioninans from Athens are considered the island's first real settlers. They were followed by the Romans, the Venetians, the Catalans and the Ottomans, who each left their respective marks. Following the Greek Revolution, the island prospered and gained an international reputation in the 1930s. The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, the Aegean Maritime Museum and the Folklore Museum are amongst the island's many fascinating attractions.
Things to do
Shoppers will enjoy the pedestrianised streets of the capital city, Chora, as well as Matoyanni Street's boutiques and cafes. Close to the waterfont lies the monumental Kazárma Building, once the personal residence of the Greek heroine Manto Mavrogenous. Petros the pelican, the official mascot of Mykonos, is hard to miss. Alefkántra, or "Little Venice", is an 18th century district with mansions whose balconies offer sweeping views of the sea and is the perfect location in which to book a holiday home, holiday rental or holiday apartment. The traditional settlement of Áno Merá, which lies near the 16th century monastery of Panayia Tourliani, is another popular destination, while Paradise and Super Paradise Beach cater to the party crowd. Families enjoy holiday houses in the quieter areas of Ornos and Psarou and the secluded beaches on the northern coast such as Houlákia, Kápari, Agrári and Ayios Stéfanos where equipment for windsurfing, jet skiing and diving is available to rent. Vistors should be sure to sample Aegean delicacies such as kopanistí, a soft cheese seasoned with pepper, and loúzes, a pork filet with spices.
